Best suggestion for early level 3DNPC follower who wants to hunt with me?

Hey there, long time fan of 3DNPC.

I’m a level 3 female hunter doing a hunterborn playthrough. My PC is a Ningheim by race but grew up in the northern mountains of Cyrodil hunting and gathering. She was drawn to Skyrim in the quest of hunting the more rare wild and northern creatures but has so far not ventured beyond the Whiterun plains, which is ample in game.

I’m considering a nice follower for her who would enjoy hunting and I’ve narrowed it down to a few candidates that would work with the 3DNPC lore and the logic of my playthrough.

  • Amalee. She seems like the best candidate. Reaching the Evergleam Sanctuary doesn’t sound too onerous, and could be roleplayed as a destination to see for any admirer of nature/hunter. Amalee loves nature and her temperament would fit well with my PC.
  • Brakh. Perhaps my runner-up to Amalee. He’s a hunter, would respect my skills, uses archery, would admire my wolf companion, and I think would very much enjoy a life as a hunter with me. The only awkward dynamic might be the male-female thing, and the fact my PC is Ningheim and he’s Orc. But still, even as I write this I have to say I can’t help but think he might be even better than Amalee. I can’t decide
  • Zora. I’ve always loved Zora and I think she’d be easy going enough to go hunting with me. However I’m concerned about dealing with the mage at Brittleshin Pass. Plus I’d have little reason to venture into scary caves as a hunter. I fear I may have to wait on her.
  • Tikrid. She is awkward and self-conscious and has some low self-esteem. I think we could get along but I fear she’d get bored hunting and might want to do other things to prove herself. I would want to stand in the way of her ambitions.
  • Meresine. I adore Meresine and she’d be a fantastic follower. My concern is I could never fell a giant at this stage in the game. I love the fact she uses enchanted arrows. As an archer I feel we’d be quite compatible. Still, those giants at Cradlecrush rock. Yikes.
  • Gorr. As a wanderer I feel Gorr would be up for hunting game and hanging out. But he’s quite the self-confident guy, I’m not sure how my PC would react to his bragging and boasting. He might also find me kind of dull, considering he’d be happier slaying bandits.
  • Duraz. As an Orc she would not doubt be well-versed in handling game and I think she’d be quite comfortable with doing it for a while. However as a sellsword she’d demand we plunder some gold and wander into caves, something I’m not sure I could agree to, at least not early on.

Well there we have it. Any thoughts? Amalee and Brakh sound like the top candidates. Plus Brakh might be slightly safer to get to right now.

I look forward to any fun suggestions.

Cheers

I agree, Brakh would probably make the most sense if your character is from Northern Cyrodiil based on location.

I would imagine you’d be traveling across the Jerall Mountains with Falkreath and the Hunter’s Lodge in mind, and probably wouldn’t venture too far north until you made some coin and got a better feel of the locals.

Excellent, I look forward to it! I’ve played with Amalee before but never really got too far with Brakh so that makes it even more fun. Thanks for the advice!

Well that was a semi-disaster. Brakh is located within eyesight of a very nasty bandit camp. I got killed too many times to count trying to get near. I suppose Amalee is the next target. Maybe I should level up a bit more before that happens!

Skjarn the butcher

Was playing Bards, Beasts and Beauties and Skjarn was dueling with Edwayne. Illdi and Pantea Ateia joined the fight and Skjarn promptly killed both of them. I resurrected Pantea and Illdi twice and then left. Guess he killed them again, because a courier delivered an inheritance letter from Pantea.

Bad Skjarn! I thought this problem was fixed.

I love Meresine but it takes me forever to be able to kill the giant. The problem is that her quest adds a second giant to Cradlecrush Rock so you have to actually kill two giants to get out of there. :P

I would go for Amalee because she’s actually along the way of some early level quests. It may even be possible if you avoid bandits and stuff along the way to get over to Eldergleam and pick her up before you even bother going to Riverwood.

Zora is tougher because you actually have to fight a mage in a cave to get to her.

Gorr is my go-to guy for when I need someone to help me get through the lower level quests. :P He’s right there and he’s more fun than Hjoromir (sorry, little dude).

I haven’t tried anything like that, and it doesn’t really matter to me which way it works. I just want to be able to take it into account when optimizing his gear.

Thanks, I went with Amalee and she’s just a champ. She fires arrows at incoming and then switches and tanks the bad guys. Only one funny/weird moment was when we found a shrine of Dibella at a bandit camp. Since she worships Dibella I had her use the shrine. Literally a few seconds later she randomly asks if it’s Sundas and she’d like to find a shrine of Dibella. I’m like, but, you, we, you just…

We’re in Riften now so I’m trying to think about whether to pick up a certain skeleton :D

AFT is a weird one. Most of the time it works fine with iNPC, but when it does break, it does it spectacularly.

To remove the follower from AFT’s management, I usually have to go through a few different permutations of ‘It’s time for us to part ways’ and ‘dismiss (normal)’ from the tweaks menu. However, if you then recruit them again, they’ll automatically go back under AFT’s system. The exception is if you have another follower system in place (Follower Live Package plays well with most things); you have an option then of recruiting via vanilla (which will use AFT) or via FLP.

The one problem I’ve found with iNPC and FLP is that the quests don’t always realise you have the follower in your party–example, to do Pit Dogs, I had to dismiss Zora from FLP and recruit her with AFT before Gorr noticed I had her with me. If you’re trying to find things organically, rather than read the spoilers for everything the way I do, you’d miss things doing that.

Problems with AFT – like I said, mostly it’s fine, but if it does go it really goes.

-Sometimes if you recruit a second follower, the first one leaves AFT’s system but doesn’t leave your party. You can’t control them, but they tag along and try to slaughter everything that moves, which is not always what you want. There is no way to solve this that I’ve yet found except going back to an older save.

-Sometimes followers stop sandboxing when you tell them to ‘relax’ via AFT and just stand still being in the way. Not the end of the world, just not all the immersion one might have hoped for. No fix yet that I’ve found, and I did try resetting absolutely everything. (Edit: Not entirely true – recruiting the same follower with FLP instead worked, again.)

-I’ve broken at least one spouse, who will no longer cook meals but keeps saying to wait till the next day. That was roughly 6 in-game months ago. :p No fix that I know of but I also haven’t tried that hard because it’s a pain and I can just buy food.

-This isn’t related to iNPC since it happens with vanilla followers too, but sometimes AFT will say that someone is a follower, but they won’t go with you. Erik the Slayer, Faendal, and a couple of housecarls have all done this, where you say ‘come with me’ and they say ‘I’m with you!’ and then walk away, or go back in the house and sit there. You can’t guide them, can’t dismiss them, they’re completely broken and again the only way to fix it is to go back to an older save before it happened. Sometimes it can be fixed by recruiting them via FLP instead.

Soooo that’s all kind of a pain. FLP is probably better, except for that one problem with quests. Hope that helps you a bit?

Daenlyn Oakhollow's Burlap Sack

So i ran into Daenlyn on the road standing beside some dead bodies. Come to find out he was a prisoner. Have no idea who or what killed the soldiers. I already had Gorr following me, i decided i’d bring Daenlyn with me to get fetch his flute. But he said i already had a follower. I then dismissed Gorr and used EFF to hire Gorr back. Then i hired Daenlyn through the vanilla follower system. Eveything went according to plan, except i can’t take off that damn burlap sack on his head, and there isn’t one in his inventory. So now i have an archer following me with a bag over his head. I can’t for the life of me figure out how he is hitting his targets.

Hi all

I first recruited T-t-A at a really low level so his stats were more or less even. But as we have both gone up in levels, I noticed that his stats don’t match his backstory. He admits to not liking armour because it slows him down, but his stats favour Heavy Armour, 2 Two Handed weapons and shield. Two handed sorta makes sense for his character since he likes to hit hard and fast, but shield skills goes against that strategy. This guy is all about speed and offense – he can also dual wield.

As you can tell this is a high priority issue :p Just something I noticed, I thought I should bring it up.
